…in love with a font, that is…. which is no great stretch because I fall hard for fonts all the time.

Buttermilk font with Museo Sans 500

Today, I bought Buttermilk to use to address my Christmas cards. At first, I was all about Carolyna Black, but then, I thought it a little too expensive for my blood. I also feel that it is a little over-used. Don’t get me wrong, it is lovely, but Buttermilk (at $49) was a comparative bargain (used along with Museo Sans 500… which is free!)

It’s funny, though, I’ve been looking at Buttermilk for a few years now, and it didn’t impress me back then. Yet, for some reason, it has wormed its way in and now I find that it’s very pretty. I don’t think I was all that into “the pretty” back in the day; I was all about the Slab fonts or the really heavy-weights and that was all I wanted to use… on everything. I guess my tastes have changed.

So there I was watching Revenge this morning on Hulu, and there it was: That poster and/or print.

Daniel’s Print

I became obsessed!

I have no idea who designed it, but if “Daniel Grayson” has it in his office, it must be by some famous artist…or not. The Grayson manor (and Emily’s house, for that matter) seem to overflow with furniture from Pier One Imports… not quite as ritzy and glam as you would expect a rich Hamptonite’s house should be.

Anyway, I spent half the afternoon, GOING CRAZY, trying to get the (rassa frassa) angles correct (I gave up immediately and just used a protractor on my screen (remember those? protractors!… I knew old-time measuring devices would still come in handy!

I could not figure out the colors, so aubergine and gold were my own choices.

My knockoff version

And please don’t ask me for the file; I don’t want to get sued for re-creating it–it’s for pure entertainment/educational experimentation on my part only… even though, I am sure, a judge is not going to care about that bit when he’s throwing away the key to my cell.

I am not much of an illustrator. I mean, I can illustrate things, (after all, my art degree is with a concentration in illustration) but I’m not quite as well-versed as these young whipper-snappers these days with their manga and their drawings of big-chested “girls” wearing dead things on their heads, but I do want to see if I can make this WACOM Intuos 5 Touch work for me.

I’ve been reading reviews and watching you-tube videos and basically telling myself that everything “those artists” were creating, I could create, as well.

And, being an instant gratification kind of person, and having no patience to wait for the bally thing to come in the mail, I bought it in an actual brick and mortar store (I know, right: radical!)

If I’d ordered it online, I would have to have someone standing here at my door during the work day, waiting for the mail, UPS or FedEx person to arrive because, for some strange reason, they all love leaving things on my step. And even though no one has ever actually stolen anything off my step, knowing my luck, this would be the very first thing that they take.

Merry Christmas!!!

So, I chose Staples (not that I had much choice as it’s the only place that carries it locally… and the only place where the technology people don’t talk to me as if I just fell off the turnip truck).

So, I am now pretty much set. I’m going to test it out for a few days and if I don’t: A) grow frustrated with it or B) break it, I’ll come back with a review.
